Silos Aren't Always for Grain

Missiles and denied entry

Roswell, New Mexico is the home of 12 Atlas F missile silos spread in a giant circle surrounding the city. We were lucky enough to locate 7 of the 12 silos. However, 3 of which were on private property with excessive "No Trespassing" signs. The 4 silos we were able to get to, the personnel entrances were locked up tight. Nonetheless, it was like a little treasure hunt, looking for the entrances shaped like wedges, at times barely visible, amongst the hills and cacti.

The Atlas F missile silos are identified by the wedge-shaped personnel entrances and usually 2 huge water tanks set back from the highway at least 3 tenths of a mile on unpaved tracks. The silos are about 17 stories deep into the ground and were used to house some of the first Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) in the 1960's.

Today, all that remains of the defunct sites are the personnel entrances, silo doors, and an occasional water tank.
